Dear Parent(s) and Guardian(s),

Do you consider yourself an intelligent person? How do you define intelligence? What role did education play in your thinking of how smart you are? If you’re looking for a thoughtful listen this week, I recommend a Hidden Brain episode called “Why You’re Smarter Than You Think.” It explores how students are often ranked and sorted, sometimes very early, based on narrow, antiquated definitions of “intelligence,” and how those labels can shape opportunity, lack of opportunity, confidence, lack of confidence, belonging, and disconnection in school. Through the story of cognitive scientist Scott Barry Kaufman, the episode highlights how traditional measures (like IQ and specific standardized tests) can miss strengths that matter deeply in authentic learning, such as creativity, persistence, motivation, problem-solving, and social understanding, and how being told you’re “not smart” can become a barrier in itself. For students receiving special education services, this conversation is a powerful reminder: how a child sees themselves as capable and intelligent is essential, and our job is to notice strengths, keep doors open, and support growth in many forms. If you have time, it’s worth listening to the episode.
