Tips for Mindfulness
Adolescence can be a stressful time. Here are some tips to help you manage your emotions:
- Seek out support from a trusted friend, teacher or family member; asking for help shows strength, not weakness
- Take time to relax, breathe, do something that you like to do; we schedule time to do homework, see friends, and make appointments and self-care is just as important. Write it into your agenda so you do it!
- Learn to pay attention to your emotions as they can provide you with a signal that something is not going right, an impetus to change
- Make sure you are getting enough sleep, taking breaks from social media, eat healthy foods (watch out for sugar and caffeine), and exercise. Remember that alcohol and other drugs act as central nervous system depressants and will worsen mental health issues. Research shows that regular physical activity is an effective way to alleviate depression and anxiety.
- Get help from a professional therapist if you’re having difficult emotions for a length of time; your Guidance Counselor or School Adjustment Counselor can help you find the right supports.
